Oracle DBA 10g Real Project

Oracle DBA is famous of its career stability and well paid wage, while it requires higher level of communication skills and DBA has to be under more stress and to meet tight project and delivery deadlines. It’s not easy to become a so called 'experienced’ DBA, the most important thing is, however, to start your first step down the long march of your DBA venture. Employers are only interested in 'experienced' professional, who has multiple years hands-on skills and has handled whole different real world scenarios. It’s a hurdle to a junior DBA, and it’s almost a mission impossible to a brand-new DBA who has no any practical skill. This is definite a gap and the gap has to be filled before a person can declare himself/herself as a DBA. Here comes a course to address this kind of demand. Instead of following the well-known book curriculums plainly, we will introduce a stressful environment which tries hard to simulate the scenarios. We will focus on the case handling and practice mentoring.

You may feel stranded when you are facing a database problem/exception even though you have  studied the DBA books and understood the fundamental concept of an Oracle database, but simply no any database admin or support experience. You may feel nervous when you're asked to complete a DBA task, even though that’s a very common one but you just never heard or learned it before. You may also feel difficult to apply and map your knowledge to solve a real problem. These kinds of feelings are not abnormal. The eventual reason is that the candidates have not been trained in the job environment, and not been taught how to handle these kind of tasks. People may ask:

• I have no picture what these DBA guys do every day, and how do they do.
• When the database system crashes or loses availability, I don't know how to fix it.
• I'm not confident if the database backup is good or not and don't know how to handle the restore if I have to.
• I have a 'slow' system, but I just don't know how to start the tuning, from where to start.

This course is designed to address these above mentioned and other concerns. When you finish, you will be confident to answer any scenario-based interview question, and/or to handle all type of day-to-day DBA tasks. During this course, the teacher will systemically organize the most useful and practical Oracle DBA skills and present these skills to the students in a real environment emulating manner. The course will focus on these following aspects but not limited to:

• Oracle DBA fundamentals
To introduce the Oracle database’s concepts and structures, aimed to draw a high level and complete picture of an Oracle system. All necessary components will be taught and reviewed to make a solid ground for further knowledge transferring.

• How to build an Oracle database system from scratch
To teach you with all preparation, installation and post-installation steps in order to build a sound robust Oracle database system. Detailed explanations and demonstrations are come from real DBA environments and not seen from any other Oracle books.

• Maintain an operational Oracle database system
A showcase which presents all activities and tasks an Oracle DBA may have to involve, the course material will cover all aspects of day-to-day database administration works: instance, storage, availability, object management, security and much more.

• Database backup and recovery
A highest priority for a DBA is to obtain a backup of database. In case the database was damaged by whatever reason, it could be restored back from previous backup, in a timely manner. Designing, implementation and support of a database backup strategy could be, and must be a most critical job for a DBA. Without a fully understanding of Oracle’s backup methodology and implementation, no one should be placed to administrate an Oracle database. In this chapter, we will spend quite amount of time to cover all backup related technologies and all possible implementations, most important, we will go through different database recovery scenarios as well.

• Performance tuning
Tuning could be the most exciting or frustrating part of your DBA works. Poor designed application code and database schema, less tuned system and database parameters, congested disk array controller and un-balanced IO workload, under-sized system configuration, all and any of these could imposed a huge performance headache to your databases, reflected by either slow response time or lower throughput, and the DBA is expected to get it fixed and make the system flying again, and this chapter will teach you how to do that.

• Database upgrade and migration
We will teach 3 different upgrade/migration methods. Databases have to be upgraded and migrated in certain cases to meet application requirements and exploited latest database technologies. This chapter will fully discuss the 3 methods and show when and how to use them to upgrade/migrate a database crossing versions and platforms, we will also talk about the version co-existing on same host machine and database downgrading as well.

• High level topics: HA and DR
Once you finished above chapters, you’ve gained necessary skills and are able to handle an Oracle database. To make you even more robust and outstanding from other candidates, we will teach how to design and implement a high availability system, we’ll talk about all solutions from OS vendors and the ones from database vendor Oracle included replication, data guard and OPS/RAC. We’ll also run through a disaster recovery process and show you how to build and maintain a DR system to recover from any unpredicted site failure.

• Production scenarios handling
We will list major system outage scenarios and teach you how to solve them quickly and efficiently. These scenarios include all possible system crashes and freezing, critical internal database exception, data corruption and availability degrading etc.

• Most common work items
200 DBA tasks will be taught/reviewed to cover all day to day DBA activities.

The course would be very technical and hands-on oriented, with these knowledge transferring, the candidates will gain the practical skills and will be well positioned to answer any question which asked by a person who knows Oracle well. You will then upgrade your skill level from 'know' to 'know-how' level, from which makes significant differences. The students are expected to become an equivalent experienced Oracle DBA and will be able to solve any database related problem upon successfully completion of this course. Your Oracle DBA endeavor will be starting from here, and could please, let Irvine, a veteran DBA to stay with you and guide you through the whole process.
